Where are you from, and how did your upbringing influence you as a
designer right now?
I currently reside in Baltimore and New York residentially but I was
mostly raised overseas, Germany London, Italy & Paris. That pretty
much sums-up my influence.

How old are you, and how long have you been designing for?
20 years old and I’ve been designing since I was in elementary school.
Who are your favorite designers if you were going to give your top 3
who would they be?
No really sure. I have some favorites but not worth sharing.
I must say I am a huge fan of your glasses, especially your wire mesh
glasses. What inspired you to make these styles that you create your
aesthetic that you are now infamous for?
No inspiration, I have very weird nightmares (or used to) and I would
dream of weird monsters wearing weird things I just tried to recreate
them.

What are your plans to grow as a designer in the near future?

I plan to take over more than the eyewear market, currently I am
working on a life brand!
What do you think about fashion in its current state, do you like
where things are right now or do you envision it growing in a better
direction?
I believe fashion is where it is suppose to be. It could be better but
let’s just say theirs people in the industry that are afraid to push.

I read that you are now working with manufactures for your glasses, as
before you were creating them by hand. How has that transition been
into manufacturing something you design rather than making them
yourself?
Actually I do still create most of the shades by hand but I do have a
factory overseas with workers I trained, to make the shades the same
way I do. And its pretty normal for small successful companies to go
from little business to over 500 sales a week obviously I couldn’t
make that many shades. I need help!!!

What celebrities that you know of have been seen wearing your pieces?
Theirs over 30 literally and I just added (Rapper the Diamond
Princess) Trina to my new line.
Stevie, what inspires you to create and be artistic?
I don’t really believe in the word inspire. It became copy in the
fashion world, I just make things I don’t have inspirations besides
for my dreams & looking at materials

Check out his stuff @ StevieBoi

Wow I must say that it is very impressive that you opened your webstore at such a young age.
Haha thanks, I hear that a lot. It was all just really done through careful planning and executing that plan to a great extent.

Why don’t you tell us a little about yourselfWell I’m 17 years old, I’m just a typical high school kid, works hard in school, a brands manager and owner of a webstore, I play a few sports here and there. Just really enjoying myself and hanging out with friends.

Where did you grow up? How did that influence your taste in fashion
I grew up in Orlando, Florida, which is actually where I still live. Where I live didn’t really influence me too much in my fashion-sense, just really because everyone dressed the same and had the same type of style. But slowly I made friends with like skaters and sneaker heads and that always kind of influenced me, I always try to stay true to my skater roots. But mostly over the summers, my family and I would take long summer trips around the United States and we’d go to big cities and I also payed attention to how people dressed and how they looked. And that always influenced me a lot. At an early age I could always tell a lot about a person by what kind of shoes they wore.

What made you start your business, how did everything get started
I really started my business by just collecting shoes. I always had a large shoe collection and I slowly began to just buy shoes, put them ‘on ice’, then resell them either a couple months or years later for more. And after awhile I figured just opening a site and selling apparel would be easier. Mostly since I didn’t have to hold apparel for such long amounts of time before reselling them haha.

You have told me you are only 17, what advice do you have for other young entrepreneurs that want to start their own business or be in the fashion business
Just really keep up with what’s going on in the world. Pay attention to the blogs, websites, videos, photos, etc. and stay up to date to what’s going on. Also start making friends with positive people who can help with whatever you want to do in life and just plan ahead carefully.

What are your top 3 favorite designers or clothing lines

My top 3 designers would be to hard to even mention just because there are so many creative people that are coming out with amazing products. But an honorable mention would have to be Jeremy Scott, everything he’s doing with Adidas is just inspiring. But my top 3 clothing lines in no particular order would have to be: Ice Cream/Billionaire Boys Club, Award Tour, and Rockers NYC.

Do you like the current state that fashion is in right now or do you have visions of the fashion industry growing in different directions
As of now it just seems that a little bit of everything is in and I’m perfectly okay with what’s going on now. I mean right now I could wear some retro stuff, like an old 1960’s letterman jacket and some vintage T-shirts. Or some really new and clean stuff, like an all white pair of Nike Air Forces with a nice fitted hat and still not be looked at as dressing weird. But fashion tends to repeat itself so it’s not really safe to predict what’s going to be next.

I know you have a webstore, how has the internet in your eyes changed the world of fashion as we know it?
The internet has completely changed everything. Now you can see what’s going on in different places and you can see it all much more quickly. And blogs have just really influenced a lot of people on a national level and they’re starting to help influence what’s really in style. But nevertheless, I definitely think it’s helping everything that’s going on right now and not hurting it at all.

What are your plans personally and for your business in the future?
Personally, I’m hoping to pursue more in college and hope to learn more that can help the business. And as for the site, just really to expand slowly and just keep true to what people want and not get caught up in the hype, I just want to give people a place where they can get products from their favorite companies for a good price.

Thanks again for doing this interview with us! We wish you great success with everything that you are doing.

Check out sketchywhitevan.com your shopping pleasure

What influences were there in your early life that lead up to where you are now?

Mainly rockabilly, I got into it when I was about 18 years old, which is now 14 years ago. Through rockabilly I discovered vintage clothes and more importantly selvedge jeans. It was through music that I found my personal style through, as do most people at that age. It just so happened that my musical tastes were very uncommon for anybody, let alone an eighteen year old.

Music is a big influence for many people, do you think the surgical precision and stripped down nature of electronic music has anything to do with your love of simple understated luxury? you like IDM ya?

Yes, IDM, what an amazing thing. I was one of the founding members of the IDM list, the reason it’s even called that, in 1993. That’s pretty much all i’ve surrounded myself with musically for twenty years, IDM and rockabilly, in a sense the two complete opposites in terms of music. Through IDM i discovered a firm by the name of Designers Republic, which is where i was heavily influenced in the way companies interact with their clients and their consumer base.

Ian Anderson, the founder of DR, was a genius and so far ahead of his time that nobody understood what he was doing until ten years after he did it. With Self Edge I attempted to combine a rockabilly style with the design sensibilities and marketing tactics that Designers Republic had founded, which came from Sheffield in the late 80’s (oddly enough, which is also about where and when IDM was started, hence the DR + IDM connection).

Interesting, who did you expect the customer to be when you first opened Self Edge? I remember those were confusing times as far as a lot of kids were more worried about how not to stain their dunks, rather than the jeans themselves.

We had no idea really because I knew the rockabilly culture enough to know that they wouldn’t be interested in new clothes, and that 99% of them wear vintage only. And the other side of the spectrum was streetwear kids, four years ago they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing a chambray shirt or a western shirt. So really I had no idea, I just knew I wanted to open a shop doing it and hope to expose America to what these Japanese companies did in a way that no other shop had. Granted it wasn’t the first time somebody was selling a Japanese denim brand in the US, but it was the first time somebody had attempted to open a purist vintage style garment shop where everything was made by the Japanese. We were not a men’s wear store, we weren’t a denim store, we were a store that only sold the Japanese reinterpretation of Americana..

Hmm, were you ever into street fashion/culture, either way I think you changed the direction of it forever (laughs). At least in the US you indirectly created a monster out of those “What Did You Wear Today” Threads. In the sense that now people are judged on their fits. Where even if someone has a good fit, someone is always like, “you have to get your denim game up.” Do you ever fear that you are creating a uniform, that people are into the products that Self Edge carries for the wrong reason?

Fashion trends always turn into a uniform. I just like to think that what we sell will make you look LESS unfashionable if you happen to wear it before or after the trend hits. If that makes any sense.

The Bigger Meaning | An Interview with Kiya Babzani

I know what you mean. How do you feel about all these people all of sudden turning sartorial. Do you think a lot of people have just grown up or do you think everyone had a personal style evolution?

Personally i think it’s a combination of age taking it’s natural effect on people and also what’s hot right now is making it easy for people to dress like they’re older than they actually are. Garments which have been reserved for older men for many years are now being worn by kids in their late teens. I honestly pay no attention to any of this though. It’s not what we sell and it’s not something i’m interested in.

What are you interested in now? Guilty pleasures? Do you still love New Balance?

I love New Balance for when I’m running, which is pretty close to never. I’m still into the same stuff I was into ten years ago, denim, vintage garments, vintage style footwear, vintage watches.

Do you ever think one day you might be into something else?

Aren’t i too old to switch my ways? The thing is about me, i don’t like to change when I don’t see a need to. I enjoy improvement, but not change for the sake of change. Probably has to do with my obsession with efficiency. I’ve had the same personal email address for 18 years. Same cell phone number for 16 years. I’ve had at least a few cars in my life, they’ve all be the same model but different years.

Dorsia is defined by their web site as “a contemporary men’s collection that adds a twist to traditional pieces. The collection combines American prep, French chic, and Italian tailoring in its designs. This season Dorsia emphasizes classic and sophisticated colors, and rich and interesting textures. Each piece is influenced by style and functionality that transcends culture. Dorsia has a distinct identity for men with refined style and taste.”

I personally think this brand has a very nice collection of garments. Their clothing is well made and was created with a simple yet modern style.

I look forward to seeing their collections in the future.

Here are some of their current collection as well as their upcoming spring/summer line.

Rivet De Cru Jeans brand based out of Los Angeles founded in late 2007, Was launched by long-time denim designer Ruben Dario Campos, an industry leader in quality and innovative jean manufacturing with over 18 years of Denim sales and design experience.

After many years of sales at the helm of Italian Denim Brand Parasuco Jeans, Ruben decided to venture out on his own. A decision that would decidedly change his life for the better, and put him well on his way to learning the art of premium denim design from scratch.

In 1999 a new option presented itself in an alliance with the RP55 Group, where he was able to successfully sharpen his skills in fabric selection, laundry and trim selections in order to create a brand that would become synonymous in the industry with great premium washes and a perfect fit, Azzure Denim was born. After almost a decade and a few brands later, Ruben once again felt the need for change and wanted to renew his first love, premium jeans.

Once again Ruben was now in a position to truly express himself and fill the void in the market with something he felt had been missing. From intricate washes, with destroy accents, carefully positioned hand brush areas and creases, he was now designing the jeans that would leave a timeless denim impression in our closets. Rivet De Cru which means vintage rivet in French, carries Ruben’s initials, a brand that finally would hold his seal of approval.

” We treat our jeans like paintings, using the denim as our canvas, the washes as our medium, and the premium denim lifestyle as our inspiration for our design, to create the perfect pair of jeans” … Ruben Campos

With striking washes and fresh new product every month, he has been able to sell to an international market and some of the leading boutiques in the United States. Combining a love for Americana West and Premium European Fashions, Rivet De Cru’s look and feel will separate it from your normal pair of jeans.
